Despite top-level exits, Infosys stock up 50 per cent since Murthy return

Mumbai: Despite high-level exits since June this year, Infosys shares still retain a gain of nearly 50 per cent since its founder N R Narayana Murthy returned to the helm of affairs at the country's second largest IT firm.

In the eighth major exit since the return of Murthy six months ago, V Balakrishnan, Infosys head of BPO business, quit the company this month on whose Board he was also a member.

Infosys' shares are still trading at a record high and have shot-up by 48.85 per cent since June, although the shares fell by over 2 per cent a day after Balakrishnan's exit.

On December 20, the IT major's scrip had hit a 52-week high level of Rs 3,569.90.

The market value of the IT major has gained Rs 65,704 crore since Murthy's return.

"We believe that exit of Balakrishnan will not make any material impact at a business level as he was not heading a very big chunk of the company's revenue but the development does indicate that there is a severe management transition happening in the company," said Ankita Somani, Research Analyst IT, Angel Broking.

"Though the impact of top management resignations at Infosys will not immediately make an impact to its topline, it may have some effect over a medium term," she added.

Analysts said the rise in Infosys scrip is also because of the weak rupee.

Rupee is at present trading at 61.79 level against the US dollar. Fall in rupee versus the US currency is broadly seen as a positive for export-focussed sectors like the Indian IT space as large IT companies benefit from a weaker Indian currency, as it positively impacts their profit margins.

Big IT companies earn a major chunk of their revenues in dollar from their US clients.

According to Kishor Ostwal, CMD, CNI Research, "As long as rupee holds at 62-level, Infosys will remain in upward direction."

Said to be a top contender to the post of Chief Executive Officer, Balakrishnan, who joined Infosys in 1991 and later became its chief financial officer, resigned, just a day after Subrahmanyam Goparaju, senior vice president and head of Infosys Labs' quit.

This is the eighth high-profile exit in the IT major ever since Narayana Murthy returned at the helm in June, 2013 bringing along his son Rohan as Executive Assistant.

While Infosys global sales head Basab Pradhan quit in July, the company's global manufacturing head Ashok Vemuri resigned in August to join rival iGate as CEO. Stephen Pratt, who co-founded Infosys consulting, had stepped down last month.

In September, Infosys Head of BPO sales in Australia Kartik Jayaraman and BPO Head Latin America Humberto Andrade had quit the company. A month earlier, its Vice President and Financial Services Head for the Americas Sudhir Chaturvedi quit.

The top level exit also comes amidst organisational restructuring that company Executive Chairman N R Narayana Murthy is overseeing after returning to revive the sagging fortunes of the company in June.

Murthy, 67, has been making a series of changes at Infosys, including cutting costs at on-site work locations, and shifting focus to winning large outsourcing projects.

Lost your Dubai driving licence? This machine will print a new one

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched self-service kiosks that enable customers to process various transactions, including replacement of lost or damaged driving licenses and renewal of vehicle ownership card (mulkiya) on their own, without requiring any staff assistance.

The RTA said in a statement that the new initiative is in keeping with its endeavours to improve service delivery channels to live up to customer expectations and needs envisaged under the Smart Government for offering seamless and hassle-free customers service.

“The kiosks are capable of providing a host of key services such inquiring about fines payment, renewal / replacement of lost or damaged driving licenses, and renewal / replacement of lost or damaged vehicle ownership card,” said Ahmed Mahboob, Director of Customers Service at RTA.

“The device can also issue a number of drivers’ certificates such as number plate ownership certificates, and the renewal of seasonal parking cards of different categories,” he added. As far as the payment methods are concerned, he said that different payment methods were considered, including cash, credit cards, Nol cards, or NFC mobile phone technology, he noted.

The Director of RTA Customers Service added: “The self-service kiosks are smart devices that enable customers to process various transactions themselves, thus obviating the need to visit the service centers, and accordingly save their time and effort.”

It is the first of its kind device at the UAE level in terms of ability to provide different types of service deliverables, which opens the way for other public entities to offer their services via RTA devices, the RTA highlighted
“Currently, the device will be available at the customer service centres at Deira, Umm Al Ramool, and Al Barsha, as well as Al Tawar Registration Center, Union Station, and the Dubai Airport,” he noted adding that the kiosks were developed homogenously by the Authority.

“The RTA has internally designed the device, identified and selected the technology required to achieve the target of enabling customers to process their transactions in a simple, smooth and transparent manner; which is viewed as a true manifestation of our strategic plan that contributes effectively to upgrading our services, and fulfilling the requirements of smart government mapped out by our astute government,” he explained.

At a later stage, the scope of the self-service machines will be broadened to include more services and they will be installed at many more locations. “The RTA has adopted plans to widen the use of these devices to cover shopping malls, all customer service centers, strategic partner centers and authorized dealers. The civic body has also envisaged a plan to widen the range of services offered by the device such as the top-up of Nol cards and Salik accounts, as well as the issuance of parking cards and various NOC certificates,” elaborated Mahboob.

“The device, which is the first of its kind at the Dubai Government level that utilizes Emirates ID card databases in verifying customer's identity, is fitted with a built-in camera and a telephone set to offer instant audio-visual support to customers in case of a procedural or technical glitch or malfunctioning,” said the Director of RTA Customers Service in a final remark.

Video: Man held in Saudi Arabia for claiming to be prophet

Saudi authorities arrested a Yemeni man claiming to be a prophet just as he tried to cross the border to his country along with thousands other expatriates deported from the Gulf Kingdom under a seven-month government amnesty this year.

A You-Tube film showed Saudi border guards holding the man and hanging a banner he was carrying around his neck.

“I am Diaa the prophet…I am a messenger of God,” the banner read, according to the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq, which said the man also spoke incomprehensible language to the police.

In July 2011, a Saudi was arrested by the police at the Grand Mosque in Makkah after he mounted a prayers platform and falsely claimed that he was a prophet and their saviour.

The 36-year-old man, identified as Sami, mounted the podium to deliver his brief speech. “I am Al Mehdi Al Montathar…I am a prophet sent (by God) to save and guide you,” he told the packed hall before was overpowered by police, Saudi Arabia's 'Okaz' newspaper had said.

There have been a series of incidents involving persons claiming to be Al-Mehdi Al-Montathar (the Chosen Imam Al-Mehdi) at Islamic holy sites in Makkah.

Ex-convict likes to meet murdered nurse’s family

Melvin Padua.

Kochi: Melvin Padua, who has come out of jail after  spending almost 19 years there  on the charge of murdering a nurse inside a train toilet in December 1994, wants to  meet the victim’s family and console them. Padua told DC that he wishes to meet Kunjumon,  brother of the victim Celinamma, at his house at Manimala in Kottayam but he is unsure what kind of reception he will get there.

“I don’t know if Kunjumon believes that I killed his sister. Anyway, I am the murderer of Celinamma in front of this society as the court had found me guilty.  Whether or not I had a role in the murder, it is natural for him to believe that I killed her as the court punished me. Hence, I don’t know how he would react if I go to their house,” Padua said.

However, Kunjumon and his family had earlier said that they had nothing against Melvin Padua as he has completed his sentence in jail. When the jail authorities asked the victim’s family if they had any objection to releasing Padua, Kunjumon had agreed  for the release. Hence, in all likelihood, Padua and his family would meet Kunjumon’s family in the coming weeks.

Before that, Padua will go to his church on Tuesday (December 24), the anniversary of  Celinamma’s death.

His wife Beatrice said she always prayed  for Celinamma’s soul and had been going to church on her death anniversaries. “We would go to our church in Tripunithura this year. But by next time, I hope I can go to the church where Celinamma is sleeping and pray for her with her family,” Padua added.

Golden time for smugglers

Hyderabad: Gold smuggling is on the rise in Hyderabad from West Asian and Southeast Asian countries. Customs officials have booked 20 cases since March, and seized 34 kilos of gold, including Friday’s seizure of 18 kg at the Shamshabad international airport.

The smugglers are using different methods, such as smuggling gold in dust form disguised as henna powder, or gold bars hidden in footwear or clothes and luggage and, in some cases, even in the rectum of the carrier.

According to customs officials, the margin of profit for smugglers would be around `5 lakh per kilogramme, substantial enough to fuel the spurt in smuggling.

Most of the gold is smuggled in from Singapore, Dubai and Thailand. Customs commissioner  M.K. Singh said, “In this financial year, 20 cases of gold smuggling involving 16 kg of gold valued at Rs 4.8 crore were detected and 13 persons were arrested. With Friday’s seizure, the figure has gone up.”

He said smugglers were concealing gold in the false bottom of luggage, in inner garments, secret pockets sewed into trousers and inside the soles of shoes. Those arrested face three to five years’ imprisonment and confiscation of the gold.

A person can legally import one kilo of gold by declaring it at Customs and paying duty. But import duty was increased this year, which is another reason for the spurt in gold smuggling.

Even after paying the increased duty, gold purchased abroad would still be cheaper than in India. But smugglers, or their carriers, try to maximise profit by trying to avoid paying duty.

The gold that was seized on Friday at Shamshabad airport was meant to be smuggled to Chennai. Customs chief commissioner B.B. Prasad said, “Gold smuggling has increased this year. The profit margins are high so they are resorting to smuggling.”

Prasad said that a week ago, Customs officials at the airport found smugglers bringing in gold in powder form that looks like henna powder. He said that profiling of the suspects is a painstaking job. “In Singapore, there are no restrictions or duty on what is carried out or carried in,” he said.

In October three passengers were held in Hyderabad for smuggling gold worth Rs 90 lakh. Salman Hyder, Hussain Ali and his wife Amthul Zahara travelling from Singapore and Bangkok respectively were arrested.

Former Dubai cop on trial for burgling car spare parts shop

A former Dubai policeman is accused  of joining hands with a friend to burgle a car spare parts shop though he was stopped and questioned by a police patrol at the scene of the crime just a little while earlier.

A police patrol suspected a car that stopped in the Naif area. When they saw that the driver was an ex-colleague who claimed he was waiting for his girlfriend, they left him. They learn later that their colleague had come there to steal from a nearby shop.

On August 12, SA, 53, Sudanese, owner of a car spare parts store, closed at 8.40pm and handed over the shop’s keys to RH to switch on the lights the next day if he reached there late.

“RH called me at around 5.30am telling me that the shop’s door was open. I asked him to check inside. He told me the safe box was missing, so I called the police. There were Dh8,000 in cash, two cheques totalling Dh25,000, a cheque book, four gold coins of five grammes each, my passport and the company’s seals.

The owner of the shop said he did not suspect his employee RH. Police reviewed camera footage of an adjacent shop. The camera captured two men wearing sports shorts, T-shirt and a cap entering the building while one stayed in a Toyota Corolla. The camera footage also shoed a police patrol approaching the driver of the car and talking to him after which the police patrol and the car moved away.

After some time, the same car came and stopped at the same place. Later, the driver of the car entered the building and he and another person were seen carrying a safe box which they put in the car and left the place.

“He was an ex-colleague at Naif police station. We knew him well. He told us that he is waiting for his girlfriend and then left the place,” a policeman on patrol told investigators.

When the two police officers saw the camera footage, they were sure that their ex-colleague was the same person who was carrying the safe with another man. Police arrested SM, 28, who admitted to being in the same area and to being stopped by a police patrol but denied committing the theft. He admitted to going into the building with his friend HA.

Police found out that HA, 26, had been detained by Al Qusais Police Station for another theft complaint. Confronting him, he admitted to burgling the auto spare parts shop with the help of SM.

“We stole the safe box which we broke in Al Muteena area and found in it Dh3,000 of which I got Dh1,000,” admitted HA.

The Court will reconvene on January 13.

6 perfect spots to watch Dubai’s ‘sunrise at midnight’ NYE fireworks

As Dubai gears up for one of the biggest nights of the year, several residents are scrambling to locate the perfect vantage point to watch the stunning vista as the emirate sets a new Guinness World Record with a fireworks and pyrotechnic spectacle on New Year’s Eve.

Organisers of Dubai World Record 2014 have confirmed a six-minute extravaganza that will stretch across 100km of shoreline, including The Palm Jumeirah and the World Islands, with 400,000 fireworks being set off from 400 locations. Must read: Your guide to watch Dubai's world record NYE fireworks across 100km of shoreline.

Adding to this master effort will be a technological marvel that will create a ‘sunrise’ at midnight, with a flying falcon taking off into the horizon as the world’s largest pyrotechnic flag in the sky will come to life, stretching across 29,250 square meters.

Meanwhile, further down the road will see the imposing Burj Khalifa bring its own fireworks display to life at the stroke of midnight, with vantage areas peppered across downtown to watch the world’s tallest building light up in a majestic sparkfest.

With residents spoilt for choice this historical December 31 evening, Emirates 24|7 finds for you the best seats in the city to catch these stunning vistas as they explode across the night sky.

Marine ride

By far the best seat in the house, the Roads and Transport Authority are offering people the chance to watch the fireworks being set off from The Palm Jumeirah, The World Islands, Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab from its ‘celebration point’ in the waters off the coast of Dubai.

For just Dh75, a special round trip aboard the RTA water bus will start from Dubai Marina Mall Water Transport Station before it sets sail from the Marinal Canal to the coastal waters of Dubai.

The water bus will stop in front of The Palm Jumeirah for 20 minutes at a special ‘celebration point’ around midnight from where those on board will be able to catch the fireworks display across the four major landmarks of the emirate.

Tickets are on sale with the RTA at the Al Ghubaiba, Al Seef and the Marina Mall water stations. For in-depth information on the water-view, read: One way to enjoy fireworks at Palm, Burj Khalifa & Burj Al Arab on NYE all at once.

Party on The Palm

A seat for a gig at any of The Palm Jumeirah gala events and parties will be the hottest ticket of the night, with all the major hotels on the manmade island, including Atlantis The Palm, the Anantara, the Sofitel, the Kempinski, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and the Rixos, are hosting special gala events and parties that will include a ringside seat to the world record attempt.

The biggest gig on The Palm, of course, remains Sandance NYE on Nasimi Beach, which is expected to host over 17,000 people on the night.

While VIP tickets and tables have already sold out, the regular Dh450 tickets are still up for grabs before those too may run out.

Those attending Sandance beware though, as the only way to attend the gig would be on a RTA bus that will depart from the American University of Dubai from 5pm onwards on December 31.

Due to the access restrictions on The Palm on the day, hotels are liaising with guests to ensure they have the entry pass or access to private shuttles to make it to the venues.

House party

While several residents on The Palm Jumeirah have vented their frustration at the entry restrictions imposed on the island due to the NYE fireworks display, organisers of Dubai World Record 2014 have reiterated that each household will be given event passes to shuttle friends and family.

Residents can use their passes to bring in their guests, providing they follow the permitted access timetable.

From 8am to 9pm, access to event pass holders in their personal vehicles and passengers in taxis holding event pass.

From 9pm to 10.30pm, access to passengers in taxis holding event pass only.

Between 10.30pm and 1am access will be stopped for the purpose of safety and security. However, provisions will be made only for emergency situations.

As parking space on the Fronds is limited, residents are advised to limit the number of guest vehicles to a maximum of five vehicles per villa. Each vehicle will have a car pass.

Walking around The Palm Jumeirah will be restricted from 10.30pm onwards to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the show.

However, even with the restrictions in place, a spot on The Palm this NYE will still be a coveted spot to catch the fireworks.

Beach soiree

Forget the parties and the galas if your idea of fun is a night on beach with friends and family, while the world erupts in celebrations around you.

The Burj Al Arab and the Kite Beach will serve as great vantage points to hunker down earlier in the evening for a picnic dinner before the night erupts in a dazzling array of fireworks at the stroke of midnight.

If a party is still the order of the hour, then almost all the beachside hotels along Jumeirah and Al Sufuoh Road are hosting special parties and gigs that will offer you a similar vista with all the frills of a celebratory NYE.

Downtown affair

While the main focus remains on the world record attempt, the other spectacular display remains the traditional Burj Khalifa fireworks by Emaar, which returns this NYE after the magnificent show on November 27, when Dubai won the Expo 2020 bid.

The ever efficient Emaar has uploaded a map on its Downtown Dubai website, which marks the exact locations where you will be able to witness the Burj Khalifa fireworks.

There are also special areas marked for those planning to visit with families and small children to ensure their safety amidst the crowds on the night.

Comfort of your couch

If the chaos that is bound to erupt on NYE is too much for you to handle, then the best option available is the comfort of your own couch.

A quiet night in with close family and friends may just prove to be the hottest ticket of the house.

All you need to do is tune into Dubai One on the night, which will be airing the fireworks display live on TV and you will be set for a Happy New Year indeed.

Is it compulsory for women to wear black abaya... and other FAQs you wanted answered

Operating under the banner of “Open Doors, Open Minds,” the Sheikh Mohammad Center for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) strives to remove barriers between people of different nationalities and raise awareness of the local culture, customs and religion of the UAE.

Based on nearly 15 years of experience, the SMCCU listed the Top 10 questions asked, with the answers given of course. In a countdown of sorts, Emirates 24|7 shares the top queries and their answers.

This is the second in the series of questions asked about Emirati lifestyle by expatriates or tourists visiting the UAE, and published on Emirates 24|7. For the first report, read: Why is it so difficult to get to know an Emirati... and other questions you always wanted to ask.
Question 7: Are there still Bedouins living in the UAE?

Answer from SMCCU: Is being a Bedouin more than just living in the desert? Of course!

When we hear the word Bedouin, we think of the nomad, who moves around in the desert looking for water to survive. However, being a Bedouin is not just about living in the desert; it entails a lifestyle with a set of customs, traditions, and values.

Here in the UAE you can say that the Bedouins have settled, while there are many who proudly connect with their Bedouin roots. Bedouins have strong ties of kinship and friendship. This is why they are well known for their generosity and hospitality, two traits that are extended to anyone they come in contact with.

Nowadays, very few people still live as a Bedouin. We go out to the desert to camp in an effort to live like we lived in the old days, but we take our cars, generators, phones, and iPads.

Question 6: Why do we see so many men in the mosques and no women?

Answer from SMCCU: The Lord created us with equality and gave both male and female an equal opportunity to earn the favor of their Lord. Equality is sometimes different as per our nature, however.

It is common knowledge that when a man can hear the Adhan, or call to prayer, he should attend to his prayers in the mosque, where he will receive extra rewards for making the effort. He does not have to but he should try.

Women are given breaks (mercy) according to her circumstances; for instance, in case of pregnancy, menstruation, when she is breastfeeding, etc. They may or may not choose to go to the mosque, but it is up to them, and they will receive an equal reward from their Lord for their prayers when offered at home.

If you think about it, women carry more of the load and responsibilities in life as mothers and wives, so as the saying goes, they are on call 24/7. Therefore, she can attend to her prayers in the comfort of her home or the mosque, whatever is easy on her.

Question 5: Are women forced to wear the black abaya?

The black abaya has become a part of the culture in the southern Arabian Peninsula. But are women forced to wear this dress? The short answer is: not by force really!

While some ladies may feel social pressure to wear the abaya to blend in and be like everyone else rather than to be different and stand out, the dress really serves a practical purpose; in a harsh desert environment you need to cover yourself with loose fitting clothing. This protects the clothes and body from the effects of the sun and sand blown around.

At the same time the abaya is modest sort of dress, which enables women to wear something simple that suits them. The general advice from the Quran is to dress modestly and not to be too show-offish.

Albeit a traditional form of dress that serves many purposes, in the past the abaya was not only black. So, the question remains why black? And isn’t black hot? This is a topic we like to discuss at the SMCCU.

Emirates 24|7 will bring you the next set of questions and answers in the series on Monday, December 30, 2013.

Crime file: Ambulance driver rapes minor girl, attempts suicide on remorse; Mother beaten to death by son for not giving money for booze and more

Ambulance driver rapes minor girl, attempts suicide on remorse

Raipur: A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an ambulance driver in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on December 23, police said on Monday.

However, apparently filled with contrition, the accused, identified as Kiran Kumar, allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire after the incident, they said.

"A case of rape was registered against Kiran, a driver with Sanjeevani 108 ambulance service, last evening on the complaint of the minor girl in Amabeda police station," said Kanker SP RN Dash.

According to the officer, the incident occurred on the night of December 23 after the victim's mother, a native of Amabeda village, was shifted to Kanker district hospital in the ambulance driven by Kiran.

"Kiran Kumar reportedly took the ill woman to hospital in the ambulance and returned to the patient's house. Kiran, who was in an inebriated condition, asked the 10-year-old girl to accompany him saying her mother is serious and needs her at the hospital," Dash said.

However, Kiran allegedly took the minor girl to an isolated place in a forest area and raped her, the SP said.

He said relatives of the victim failed to inform police about the incident even after she confided in them on December 24.

The incident was reported to police on Friday, following which medical examination of the girl was conducted, which confirmed rape, the officer said.

When a police team was sent to arrest Kiran it came to know that he had allegedly attempted suicide at his residence on Thursday and suffered minor burns.

A case under section 376 (rape) of IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offence Act has been registered against the accused, Dash said, adding that Kiran would be arrested after he gets discharge from hospital.

Nokia lines up Asha to boost sales

Hyderabad: With consumers of all income groups rooting for smartphones, Nokia plans to launch its most affordable smartphone in the Asha series, in an attempt to resurrect its declining market share.

“The new Nokia Asha 500 will launched later in December and is set to be the lowest priced affordable smartphone to offer WhatsApp and many other features, which are available only in high-end phones,” said T.S. Sridhar, regional director, south, Nokia India, on Tuesday.

The handsets worth less than Rs 5,000 make up nearly 85 per cent  of the Indian handset market in terms of volume.

Nokia, however, lost its ground in this segment to Indian handset makers, who import Chinese mobiles under their brand name. According to IDC, Nokia had a 14.7 per cent market share in the Indian mobile phone market in Q3, 2013, putting it in second place behind Samsung that had a market share of 15.3 per cent.

Sridhar, who was in Hyderabad to launch Nokia Asha 502 and 503, said the newly launched handsets will have the aspirational value at affordable price. He, however, added that Nokia Lumia is doing well in the highend segment and its Windows OS has emerged as the second most preferred mobile software in India.

DC special: Dad rapes schoolgirl, sires 3 kids

Thanjavur: Like most teenagers, Mala (name changed) too had great dreams but they were shattered when her father raped the schoolgirl and made her pregnant. She is 24 now and recently delivered his third child as he repeatedly abused her over the years after drugging her. Her mother had deserted the family long back and the father had remarried.

The rapist, an auto-rickshaw driver, was arrested last month following Mala’s complaint.

Mala and her third child, aged six weeks, are now being taken care of by a kind woman cop and some hospital staff near Thanjavur while the two older kids are with her stepmother.

“I had dreamt of a career in commerce and economics, but fate decided otherwise. My own father destroyed my life and made me mother of his three children. But I am determined to resume studies and stand on my own feet”, Mala told Deccan Chronicle here on Friday. She expressed hope she would get help “from some kind souls, from this society”.

Father warned her of serious harm if she informed anyone

The question that comes to mind as to why Mala (name changed) did not fight back when her father repeatedly raped her and sired three children, and why she did not report him, evaporates when she narrates her scary story.

After the first abuse—she does not want to go into too many details saying it’s “too traumatic to even think leave alone recall in detail”—he threatened her of serious bodily harm if she talked to anyone about it.

On the other hand, he would even allow her to continue studies and pursue her dream of doing a degree in business administration if she cooperated, he told her. And when she resisted, he shaved her head and branded her all over with hot iron, Mala told DC on the sidelines of a ‘public hearing’ on abuse of women and children, organized by All-India Democratic Womens’ Association (AIDWA) here on Friday. “My first child, a boy is now four-years-old. The second is a girl, 2-1/2 years old. He even allowed me to join the BBA course but I had to discontinue when I became pregnant third time.
Throughout my tenure at school and college, I would keep away from classmates and rush back home as otherwise I would be beaten up”, Mala said.

She said her mother had deserted the family and the father remarried. Together, the two subjected her to physical and mental abuse.

To ensure she suffered in silence, her father had even drugged her. After delivering her third child, a boy, last month, Mala left the baby in a church with a note saying she would not be able to take care of the child.

People found the baby crying and saw the note beside him. Police traced Mala at the bus terminus and took the sobbing mother back to the hospital, where she made a detailed statement about her terrible ordeal over the years.

The auto driver was picked up by the police after that and remanded to custody.

A case under various penal sections of law, including rape, physical assault, threat of life and illegal custody, has been registered against the alleged rapist, according to AIDWA officials.
A kind policewoman and some hospital staff are now taking care of Mala and the baby, but they need a better and permanent arrangement.

“It is sad that in this democratic and civilised country, a girl is not safe even in her house”, said AIDWA vice-president U Vasuki.

'Erasable Internet' may topple Google, Facebook's permanence, says analyst

Washington: With ' erasable Internet' becoming the next big thing, permanence of content as established by sites like Google and Facebook, which in turn help the companies make revenue, appears to be in a threatened position, an analyst has pointed out.

The Wall Street Journal's Farhad Manjoo, in his analysis has pointed to a new business model that could someday lead to Google's downfall.

According to Fox News, companies like Google and Facebook have built an Internet based on permanence as they store their users' data for advertising purposes.

However, with auto-destruct photo sharing app like Snapchat, the position of Google and Facebook is threatened as the user data isn't saved and used to sell ads.

Manjoo has pointed that if Snapchat's model proliferates to other areas of communication and to the Internet in general, it could lead to some serious problems to the current leaders, which have business models that rely entirely on saving as much data as possible about their users and serving targeted advertisements based on that data.

Despite being the leaders in online presence, Google and Facebook might be toppled with the 'Erasable Internet of Things', unless they adapt and rebuild their businesses from the ground up.

There was such anger with protests Exactly a year ago, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was gang raped on a moving bus in Delhi. That led to a national outrage with people questioning inefficiency of the government to provide security to women. There was such anger with protests across the nation that anyone would have thought it would be the last rape in the nation. That wasn't to be. Safety of women in the national capital was questioned, and in fact that was one of the reasons why chief minister Sheila Dikshit and the Congress suffered a humiliated defeat at the hands of political newcomer Arvind Kejriwal and his party Aam Safety of women in the national capital was questioned, and in fact that was one of the reasons why chief minister Sheila Dikshit and the Congress suffered a humiliated defeat at the hands of political newcomer Arvind Kejriwal and his party Aam Aadmi Party. Political implications apart, the December 16 gang rape made headlines in international media, exposing how insecure women are in India. Despite the magnanimity of the most brutal rape of the country, very little has changed in one year. The conviction rate for rape is a mere 27 per cent which is why rapists aren't scared. The four accused in the December 16 rape case, gym instructor Vinay Sharma (20), bus cleaner Akshay Thakur (28), fruit-seller Pawan Gupta (19) and Mukesh Singh (26) were awarded death penalty as the court felt it was a rarest of rare cases. Main accused Ram Singh was found dead in jail while another is a minor.Notwithstanding pressure, the Central government in April amended the Anti-rape bill, which now provides life-term or death sentence for rape convicts. According to the new law, an offender can be sentenced to rigorous imprisonment that is not less than 20 years. The law also fixed age for consensual sex at 18 years. One thing that has changed is, none will take things lying down. But it doesn't mean that the incidents have gone down. Shockingly, a rape is reported every 20 minutes in India. A young girl's sexual harassment complaint resulted in the arrest of Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal. The girl was bold enough to report against her boss, putting her career at stake. Neither death sentence nor new law has acted as a deterrent. The number of rape cases in Delhi have almost doubled. Till November this year, 1,450 cases of rape cases were registered against 706 in 2012. There is an element of positivity about it, as police say that more women are coming forward to report rapes. But as Indian women are known for, not all aren't comfortable reporting about rape. The only mistake of a 23-year-old software engineer, who was kidnapped and raped in a cab Hyderabad, was that she trusted the cab drivers to take her to her hostel. But she ended up being raped.Unlike the Tehelka journalist, this girl was scared to report it, she filed a false complaint that there was an attempt to rape her. But the incident came to light when the police arrested the cab drivers, who admitted to raping her.Rapes are tarnishing the image of the country as a whole. Internationally, India is perceived as the rape capital with governments of foreign countries warning women against travel to India.A photojournalist was gang raped when on duty in Mumbai. That wasn't the first time for the accused, who thought when others didn't complain why would she? Experts debate if raping is a psychological problem? Most of the rapists won't have any remorse or guilt feeling. In many cases, they deny the crime or feel what they did wasn't wrong. There is a need for a systemic social change and the solution doesn't lie in the law, but in changing the mindset of people.

Maruti eyeing presence in one lakh villages by March

New Delhi: As the going gets tougher in the Indian auto industry, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is driving into the rural markets to boost sales.

The company, which devised a plan to tap rural markets five years ago, is planning to have presence in a total of one lakh villages across the country by March next year.

"The industry has seen a decline in sales by about 4-5 per cent this year.On the other hand, rural sales - which accounts for about 30 per cent of our total sales -- have grown by 18 per cent in the April-November period this fiscal," MSI Chairman R.C. Bhargava told reporters here.

He said had it not been for the rural market, the company would have had an even tougher time and "we would have been in similar mess like the rest of the industry" as demand in urban areas has slowed down by 5-6 per cent.

"We have been giving emphasis on rural markets. Last year, we had covered 44,000 villages and till November this year, we have presence in 60,000 villages and by March next year, we will have presence in one lakh out of a total of 6.51 lakh villages in India," Bhargava said.

At present, MSI has a total of 700 rural outlets, which are accompanied by workshops that are authorised to carry out repairs under warranty to an extent. In addition, it has 650 mobile vans that has helped in servicing even at the customers' home, he added.

Commenting on the overall market situation, Bhargava said the market continues to be down due to the overall condition of economy and the political situation.

"In terms of retail sales, for the fiscal till November we are one per cent up from that of last year. We are hopeful that we will be able to match last fiscal's numbers," he said.

Commenting on exports, Bhargava said the company will fall short marginally due to changing policies in some of the key markets like Sri Lanka and Algeria. "We were aiming 1.2 lakh units of export this year, which we think we will fall short.

All overseas markets have uncertainties associated with policies and economy," he said. Asked about future expansion, specially the company's Gujarat plant, he said the project is currently 'in cold storage' at the moment.

"There is no point in creating additional capacity when there is no demand. We have the land, boundary wall has been erected but we are not undertaking any capacity creation. We have not decided when we will start work at the Gujarat plant," Bhargava said.

He said the company will wait and watch for the outcome of the upcoming general elections next year and what steps the new government takes in order to boost economic growth and manufacturing.

"We don't expect anything to happen between now and the elections. We hope the elections will bring something positive for the industry," he said. MSI is, however, expecting December to break monthly record in terms of retail sales with about 1.2 lakh units, company, MSI COO (Marketing and Sales) Mayank Pareek said.

"Apart from discounts, which are about Rs 17,000 on an average, exchange offers and customers advancing purchases ahead of January is boosting our December sales," Pareek said.

On the demand for diesel passenger vehicles, he said for the industry overall share has come down to 54 per cent this fiscal as compared to 58 per cent.

Bhargava said that the company's R&D centre at Rohtak is on track to be completed by 2016. It would be Suzuki's fourth such facility, the rest three being in Japan.

Commenting on the LCV project, Bhargava said the company is sticking to its 2016 launch plan. He said the vehicle could come in various options, including CNG and petrol.

CBI probes Vedanta head

Anil Agarwal.

New Delhi: The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) against Anil Agarwal, chairman of the Vedanta Group, and others to probe alleged irregularities in the disinvestment of the Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) in 2002 during the period of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

Sources said, “There are allegations that Sterlite Industries, part of Vedanta Resources, had picked up stake in the public sector undertaking at an undervalued price, resulting in the estimated losses running into hundreds of crores to the exchequer. The PE has been registered to probe whether the disinvestment led to any loss to the exchequer.”

The PE has been registered against Mr Agarwal and unknown officials of HZL, ministry of disinvestment and ministry of mines, sources added.

Sources said the agency will soon seek clarifications from Mr Agarwal and officials of ministry of disinvestment and ministry of mines.

Sources did not rule out the possibility of seeking clarifications from two former officials of the ministry who had reportedly approved the disinvestment process.

“The agency sleuths may also seek relevant records from the ministry concerned,” sources said. The company has been merged with another group Sesa Goa in August this year and renamed as Sesa Sterlite. Without registering a regular case, the agency does not have power to call anybody to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters for recording the statement.

If the agency decides to convert the PE into a regular case, then only can the CBI send summons to the people.  A statement issued by then ministry of disinvestment at the time of HZL’s disinvestment, ho-wever, had justified the stake sale to Sterlite. Sources alleged serious flaws in the disinvestment process undertaken by the then government in 2002.

Lift of import curbs may crash gold prices

Mumbai: With gold taking a beating in 2013 along with several other commodities, commodity traders expect gold to  continue to be weak if the Indian government relaxes the duties on imports.

Considering the three-year boom in the stock market and the recession in the commodities market, as per tradition commodities should witness a rally, said Dharmesh Bhatia, of  Kotak Commodities Services Ltd.  “But investors will have to be really savvy to make a return from commodities,” he said.

Further particularly in the case of gold he says, prices could crash if government removes the duties on gold imports or even relaxes the curbs significantly. Today there is a high premium on gold because of the shortage due to a drastic drop in gold imports.

Mr Bhatia said that Barclays Bank had stated that commodity-linked investment funds are headed for record outflows in 2013 and between November 2012 to November 2013, there has been a $88 billion decline in assets under management.

Investors had withdrawn $36.6 billion from the commodity funds during this period due to the decline in prices of sugar, coffee, nickel, gold, silver etc. But the biggest and bulk sell-off was witnessed in gold with a 29 per cent crash after a rise over nearly 11 years.

EPFR global which is a more official source estimates that investors have withdrawn $38.8 billion investments from gold funds alone.

Gold prices globally crashed by 37 per cent till December from the record peak of $1,923 per ounce witnessed during September 2011.

While there is no indication that government is in any hurry to left the ban on gold imports there has been a demand from the Union commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma for relaxing the curbs on gold imports.

Even  the Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan is of the view that if curbs on gold imports continue. It would incentivise smuggling.

Spreading the sheen of green

Revathi Kamath is on a mission; a mission to make Bengaluru green. She can be called the preen queen, as the landscapist is busy pruning 250 acres of land management and 50 acres of land development. She also loves music and launched her classical Carnatic music album recently. We ask Revathi on how she took to landscaping and she shares, “I have always liked flowers. I was supplying flowers to friends who would compliment my flower arrangements. So I started Calyx in Jayanagar and started getting a lot of flower decoration work for events. I supplied flowers to all the star hotels and to top corporate houses.”

One event led to another and Revathi was soon doing flower decoration for prominent weddings and parties in the city. And that’s how her first landscaping project came about.

She recalls, “I had organised flowers for an event for Mico Bosch and its MD, Albert Hieronimus liked my work so much that he contacted me to pretty up his his house. I didn’t know much but took out time to research and once I learnt the pulse of it, I presented the Candle Garden project to him. He loved it so much. After that there was no looking back. I signed up as the official landscape consultant for Mysore University and Kuvempu University and ventured into many government projects and maintained six prominent parks including the Freedom Park. I designed and executed all 22 projects by Reddy Structures. I also did landscaping for Bombay Rayon Industries, Elita Promenade, Nitesh Estates, Hiranandani Builders, Guhantara Resort and others. Suzuki’s Hustler raises eyebrows

Tokyo: Suzuki Motor Corp had little idea that the name “Hustler” for its new, boxy minicar aimed at outdoorsy Japanese customers might cause mirth among English speakers for its association with an adult magazine — but it’s not alone.

Plucking words from foreign dictionaries without checking how they might be received by native speakers appears to be a habit at Japanese companies, which have produced countless products with unintentionally unsavory names.

The name Hustler was chosen to conjure the image of agility, as well as invite nostalgia from customers who remembered an off-road motorbike released in 1969 called the Hustler 250, said a Suzuki public relations officer.

Foreign visitors might instead recall the sexually explicit magazine started by porn magnate Larry Flynt as competition to Playboy, or associate the word with obtaining mon-ey through illegal activities or vice industries.

The Hustler follows a string of other Japan-made cars to bemuse speakers of foreign languages, such as Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd’s Naked in 2000 and Isuzu Motors Ltd’s 1983 Bighorn.

Spanish speakers were taken aback by Mazda Motor Corp’s Laputa, a derogatory word for sex worker, while Mitsubishi Motors Corp sold its Pajero model as the Montero in Spanish-speaking countries as the former is slang for sexual self-pleasure.

Japanese confectionery often yields a chuckle from foreign tourists, too. A tubular chocolate snack called Collon and an isotonic sports drink named Pocari Sweat, for example, bear unfortunate associations with bodily functions.

While many brand names around the world don’t translate across borders — the Iranian washing powder Barf, which means snow in Persian, or a Swedish chocolate bar called Plopp, for example — Japanese companies often use foreign words for how they sound, with little regard to their original meaning.

Performance pay helped top executives get 10-22% hike in 2013

New Delhi: Faced with one of the roughest years for global economy, top corporate executives in India appear to have weathered the storm in 2013 as performance- linked pay helped them get salary hikes of 10-22 per cent.

According to experts, sluggish economic trends did not have much impact on executive remuneration packages and 35-40 per cent of corporate leaders also managed to secure their bonus payments linked to individual and company performances.

This assumes significance in the backdrop of top executives being affronted with tremendous pressure to maintain profit margins, control costs, retain talent and manage business sentiments.

The HR consultants say the performance of company executives in India has in fact turned out to be above average and better than those in developed countries.

HR consultancy Unison International's Managing Director Udit Mittal said "the performance of many executives has been better this year compared to last year and despite the global slowdown, overall performance has been above average". "India has been a self-sustainable economy and in other countries due to global market sentiment, performance has been comparatively bad," he said.

Echoing the view, HR services firm Randstad India's CEO Moorthy K Uppaluri said, "Corporate India CEOs, were lucky compared to their Western counterparts as India was still a growth market, though the rate of growth was modest".

"On the other hand, senior executives in developed countries, particularly Europe were faced with a stagnant growth prospects, financially constrained governments and diminishing returns," he added.

In terms of remuneration, top executives pay is estimated to have increased by 8-10 per cent on an average in 2013, while senior executives got a hike of 20-22 per cent.

As per executive search firm MANCER Consulting, there was a rise of 15-20 per cent in compensation levels for executives in 2013.

"There is positive increment expected in financial year 2014-15 as well, as senior executive salaries is inching towards their foreign counterparts slowly," MANCER Consulting CEO Satya D Sinha said.

As per Randstad, Indian top executives got a pay hike of 5-10 per cent in 2013, while 35-40 per cent of senior leaders were given bonuses based on their performance.

"Most companies rewarded senior executives who could take a lead in transforming their business and deliver expected results," Uppaluri noted.

Executive search firm Spectrum Talent Management Director Vidur Gupta said, "Companies have rewarded the ones who did well and at the same time most average performers had to do with very ordinary hikes".

However, Deloitte India Senior Director Human Capital Advisory P Thiruvengadam is of the view that top executives witnessed moderate increases in salaries that just barely compensated for the inflation. Predicting a brighter 2014, experts believe that next year holds a lot more in terms of new jobs and the average increment could be at least 15 per cent for top executives.

"Being the chief executive of an Indian company has never been more rewarding for professionals with expensive cars, a large house, overseas holidays and an eight-figure salary, with year-end bonus and stock options thrown in," MANCER's Sinha said. Meanwhile, tough business climate had its fallout as well and some companies saw changes in their top management team.

The attrition rate was also high. Unison International has estimated that attrition rate of executives was on an average 14 per cent, more than in 2012.

Individually, data provided by MANCER Consulting showed that pharmaceutical industry faced the highest level (30-35 per cent) of attrition rate among its executives followed by IT/ITES sector (20-25 per cent), healthcare (15 per cent), chemicals (14 per cent) and real estate (10 per cent). Lowest attrition rate was witnessed by steel sector and the telecom sector at 2 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.

Experts say that a large part of attrition can be attributed to under-performance and cost-cutting measures, while there have also been cases of early retirement.

Randstad pegs the average tenure for top executives at 6.8 years and estimates 60 per cent of Indian CEOs to be holding office for less than 5 years. Sector-wise, senior executives in many industries such as telecom, automobiles, infrastructure, real estate, power and aviation had the most disappointing time owing to slowdown, falling rupee, rising cost of fuel and raw material as well as difficulty in raising funds for business operations.

In contrast, top corporate leaders across IT, ITES, healthcare, FMCG, hospitality, retail, e-commerce, education had a relatively rewarding year. "Rupee depreciation augmented the good performance of companies with export opportunities," Randstad's Uppaluri said.

"Power and Infrastructure has definitely been the worst hit last year owing to a tough political scenario as projects haven't moved well and it has been difficult to perform," Spectrum's Gupta noted.

Tenants in Dubai can appoint agents to find them a house

It's not that only landlords in Dubai can appoint leasing/rental agents, renters in Dubai too have the option.

The Dubai Land Department (DLD) website states a renter can appoint a preferred agent by signing a standard form (D2) and should appoint maximum of three agencies.

It is rarely heard that prospective tenants appoint agents to help them find a house. Mostly people call the agents after screening their adverts to schedule an appointment and visit to the listed property. Although it is a time consuming work for the tenant, appointing a leasing agent puts the onus of finding the right house, within the defined needs, of the client.

Real estate agents say they rarely get individuals signing up with them as exclusive agents aiding them to find a rental property, it is mostly the corporates that do so.

In Dubai, the renter pays five per cent of the annual rent amount as a service fee or commission to the agent. This is payable only upon signing a rental contract agreement.

D1 form for landlords

Landlords also need to sign a standard form (D1) to appoint an agent to look after their property and find a suitable tenant. This service is negotiable and flexible, according to DLD.

“If using a registered agent/broker, ensure you have appointed them on the approved form (D1) and ensure the agent knows the market, likely rent return for the area, and the agency has a tenant ‘pre-screening’ procedure in place.”

DLD also informs landlords to make sure to inform their communication updates and consultation with each other on the form.

“If the agent does not do what they agreed to do, terminate them and find another agent,” it recommends.

The findings are based on a study conducted among more than 5,600 firms across 12 industry sectors. All the opportunities have been projected in for the organised sector, it added. Besides FMCG, more jobs are expected in healthcare, IT, retail and hospitality sectors.

"Finding employees who have employability or job readiness skills that help fit into and remain in the work environment is a real problem and threatening to growth. These issues need to be addressed on priority," he added.

"Coming year 2014 seems very promising. To increase their revenue, companies need to feel the long time vacant positions and also they have to create more jobs as compared to 2013. Overall, it seems the worst condition is over for the job market and we are entering in a zone of another two years of positive growth if not more," she added.

Standalone offices find no takers

Many commercial buildings on the Jubilee Hills-Madhapur stretch are awaiting renters. — DC Many commercial buildings on the Jubilee Hills-Madhapur stretch are awaiting renters. — DC

Hyderabad: Many standalone commercial buildings in Madhapur, Hitec City, Kondapur, Kothaguda and other areas in Cyberabad are sporting “to-let” or “for lease” signs. Several office spaces are lying vacant for the past few months in the once most sought-after stretch from Jubilee Hills Road No. 36 to Hitec City and InOrbit Mall on one side and Kondapur crossroads on the other side.

Realtors attribute high rental values and lack of parking space as the main reasons for vacancy in retail commercial space in standalone buildings located on either side of the main road in Madhapur and Hitec City areas.

Veera Babu, the  director at Cushman and Wakefield (Hyderabad office), said that most IT firms prefer taking office space within furnished IT parks and campuses instead of opting for standalone buildings that are not likely to accommodate all their employees.

“They want 100 per cent diesel generator back-up, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning facilities with finished toilets and leveled flooring; they want high standards of general maintenance and upkeep and ample car parking.

Amenities like common cafeteria, gymnasium, food courts, recreation areas and high-speed lifts in addition to state-of-the-art security systems. The IT firms also look for good neighbours, typically MNCs, in other parts of the building. Some of these features or most of them may not be available in stand-alone buildings,” Babu said.

Local real estate agents said while the ground and first floor commercial spaces were being rented out easily at a premium rate of Rs 140 per sft, the vacancies were mostly in the second, third and fourth floors.

“Owners of the standalone buildings are not willing to reduce the rental price. They prefer to wait until they get a good price. The rental rate for the upper floors is anywhere between Rs 40 and Rs 60, which the prospective parties say is on the higher side. Many prospective parties have also complained about lack of parking space for tenants of upper floors,” said Rama Krishna of RK Rentals.

However, some building owners have another version.  “Despite offering fully-furnished office spaces with power backup facilities, decent flooring and visibility and sufficient parking along with computer systems in standalone buildings, there is little response. There have been a few enquiries but the same are not really translating into actual deals,” said A. Srinivasa Reddy, owner of a four-storeyed posh building at Madhapur.
